Radio Equipment and Electromagnetic Compatibility Directives

The EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) Directive 2004/108/EC is one of a number of CE Marking Directives that have been recast to bring them into line with EU Decision No. 768/2008/EU New Legislative Framework (NLF) introduced in 2008. The recast Electromagnetic Conformity (EMC) 2014/30/EU directive came into force on the 18th April 2014. The old directive  2004/108/EC was repealed on the 20th of April 2016 since which time manufacturers can no longer continue to place products on the market unless they comply with the new Directive.

The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU came into force on the 13th of June 2016, with a transition period of one year until the 13th of June 2017. During this transition period manufacturers of Radio Equipment may decide to use the R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC or Radio Equipment Directive. After the 13th of June 2017 no radio equipment may be placed on the market unless it complies with the Radio Equipment Directive.
